In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to care for his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Tales of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to check here regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
